In tandem with the UN Declaration of 2021 – 2030 as global Decade of Ecosystem Restoration, the African Ecological Restoration Foundation (AERF) is currently catalyzing tropical forest ecosystem restoration and community-based biodiversity conservation activities in communities in the Cross River Rainforest region of Nigeria.
The Cross River Rainforest region is
contiguous in landmass with both Takamanda Forest Reserve and Korup National Park of the
Republic of Cameroon. The above region is a renown global biodiversity hotspot and region of
species endemism, hosting threatened fauna species like the Cross River Gorilla (Gorilla gorilla
diehli), Drills (mandrilus leucophaeus), and Leopards (panthera pardus).
AERF has a broad long
term goal of expanding the scope of her activities, projects and programs to other sub-Saharan
African countries experiencing deforestation, biodiversity decline, and climate change
mitigation and adaptation challenges, subject to availability of resources.
The World Bank, in her 2010 World Development Report: “Development and Climate Change”
maintained that a climate-smart world is within reach if we act now, act together, and act
differently; and that “unmitigated climate change is incompatible with sustainable
development.” AERF’s core approach and strategy is the building of local, national, and
international partnerships with public, private, communities, and NGOs towards implementing
local action agenda on ecosystem restoration, biodiversity conservation, and climate change
mitigation and adaptation initiatives.
