Advocacy on Forest Policy Change in favour of Ecological (Ecosystems) Restoration
Media Engagement
Media and stakeholders’ engagement and networking activities for participation in ecological (ecosystems) restoration activities.

Coastal, Marine, Mangrove Restoration
Coastal vegetation, especially mangrove is being harvested for firewood, or cleared for other purposes e.g. aquaculture, and oil and gas activities. Mangroves are becoming seriously depleted and thus require restoration.

Wetland Restoration
The United Nations Convention on wetlands maintains that “Wetlands are areas of marsh, fen, peatland or water, whether natural or artificial, permanent or temporary, with water that is static or flowing, fresh, brackish or salt, including areas of marine water the depth of which at low tide does not exceed six meters”. Examples of wetlands include: (i) estuarine (including deltas, tidal marshes and mudflats, and mangrove swamps); (ii) lacustrine (wetlands associated with lakes); (iii) riverine (wetlands along rivers and streams); (iv) palustrine (meaning “marshy” – marshes, swamps and bogs).

Tropical Forest Restoration
Tropical rainforests are the most species rich natural environments on Earth. 75% of the Earth’s biodiversity is found in the tropics. Unfortunately, tropical deforestation is now a complex global problem. In Nigeria for instance, over 90% of her tropical forest has been lost due to unsustainable agricultural practices, logging, mining, road construction, urbanization, etc. Other countries in sub Saharan Africa are all facing the same problem. Without aggressive forest restoration programs, the future generation in most African nations will not have forest resources to mitigate climate change and support life.

Grassland, Shrubland, Desert Restoration
Several countries in sub Saharan Africa are facing desertification problem hinging on Sahara Desert encroachment. Sand dunes are expanding and taking over large hectares of land that used to be grassland. Cattle rearers are migrating southward resulting in farmer-herder clashes or land battles.

Wildlife Restoration
The IUCN website on Species Red list alerts the world on the growing number of extinct, endangered and threatened flora and fauna species in different nations. The explosion of commercial bush meat hunting activities in tropical nations seriously exacerbates the problem. It is vital that wildlife restoration initiatives are taken seriously in all forest communities, parks and protected areas of tropical nations.

Urban ecology (ecosystem) restoration activities
Vasishth (2015) posits that urban areas are 2.5 to 5 degrees Celsius warmer than their surrounding countryside. This is due to lack of, or inadequate integration of nature into urban development – popularly referred to as urban development ecologization by ecologists. Over half of humanity is already urban (living in urban areas), and it is projected that by 2050, 80% of humanity will be living in cities. Will such cities be hot or cool? Head and Lam (2011) opine that cities can effectively ecologize themselves by (a) reducing their carbon footprint; (b) reducing their ecological footprint; (c) improving their Human Development Index scores; and (d) increasing biodiversity. All of the above are intricately linked to urban ecology (ecosystem) restoration initiatives which include the establishment of urban forest, parks, botanic gardens / arboretum, green spaces, street trees, etc. (Meisner, et. al., 2019).

Climate change is seriously influencing rising temperatures, drought, crop failure, food scarcity, and land conflicts in Africa. AERF will implement community based sustainable agricultural activities that will be derived from the felt needs of participating rural communities.

In order to tackle the bush meat crisis in sub Saharan Africa, AERF will promote community based wildlife management activities and context sensitive alternative protein programs that will include aquaculture, livestock farming, poultry, piggery, snails farming, grass cutter farming (wildlife domestication initiative), etc.
